Foundation Models for Robots
The same approach that produced powerful language models is being applied to robotics. Foundation models trained on vast amounts of video, simulation, and robot experience can generalize to new tasks and environments.
Google's RT-2 and other robot foundation models can understand natural language instructions, perceive objects in novel scenes, and plan manipulation sequences they were never explicitly programmed for.
Current Capabilities
AI-powered robots now handle warehouse picking (Covariant, Amazon), food preparation, agricultural harvesting, and surgical assistance. Humanoid robots from Figure, Tesla (Optimus), and 1X are demonstrating increasingly capable locomotion and manipulation.
The gap between demonstration and reliable, economical deployment remains significant. But it is closing faster than most predicted.
The Road to General-Purpose Robots
The ultimate goal is robots that can operate in any unstructured environment — homes, offices, construction sites — understanding instructions, adapting to surprises, and performing diverse physical tasks. We are years away from this, but each advance in AI reasoning and perception brings it closer.
