AI can now generate text, images, audio, and video that rivals human-created content. This raises profound questions: Should AI-generated content be labeled? Who is responsible for its accuracy? How does it affect the livelihoods of human creators?

Disclosure and Transparency

There is growing consensus that AI-generated content should be disclosed, especially in news, education, and marketing. Many platforms now require labels on AI-generated images. The EU AI Act mandates disclosure in certain contexts.

The practical challenge is enforcement. As AI outputs become harder to distinguish from human work, detection becomes unreliable. Self-disclosure and cultural norms may matter more than technical detection.

Impact on Creative Industries

Writers, artists, musicians, and designers express legitimate concern about AI competition. AI can produce content faster and cheaper than humans in many categories. The impact on freelancers and entry-level creative work is particularly acute.

However, history suggests that tools that automate creation tend to expand the market rather than shrink it. Photography did not eliminate painting. Desktop publishing did not eliminate designers. The question is how quickly and smoothly the transition happens.

A Path Forward
